How aging affects bone health

Osteoporosis makes bones fragile and increases the risk of fractures, particularly of the hip, spine, and wrist. Hip fractures are especially dangerous in older adults, carrying a mortality risk of 15–30% within the first year.

Nutrition

Weight-bearing and resistance exercise are the most effective non-pharmacological interventions for maintaining bone density. Activities such as walking, jogging, tennis, dancing, and strength training stimulate bone remodelling and help maintain bone mass well into older age.

Lifestyle factors

Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption accelerate bone loss and increase fracture risk. Quitting smoking and moderating alcohol are important steps. Falls prevention — through balance training, removal of home hazards, and regular vision checks — is also critical in older adults.
